Architectural Photography

One of the largest emotional draws to photography without people as a subject in general is the ability to demonstrate emotion and personality from inanimate objects. This is especially true in architectural photography. It is almost the opposite of landscape photography only in that the subjects are man-made in architectural photography. Additionally, the architects design the buildings to photograph well and to obviously be appealing to the eye. However, the essence of their internal spirit is visible in the manner in which the architects manipulated their media.

Great architectural photography captures this essence and presents it in the best form. This is true even when the architecture is dilapidated and decaying. Additionally, the availability of subject matter is vast. This presents a great opportunity to apply practically every technique involved in photography and art. Architectural portraiture is interesting in color and black and white, it also presents an opportunity to film in the varying degrees of morning and evening light.

Additionally, because the conditions vary and because black and white photography may be a preference, architectural photography can be approached during day light hours also. There are some other considerations also. People should research the time that certain structures are open for viewing and if photographing is allowed. Visit the structure in the varying degrees of light also. This will optimize the chances of knowing the best times to photograph. It is also advised to take many pictures. This will highlight the changing conditions, and provide many different shots in order to increase the likelihood of getting that great picture.

Black and White

Photographers that shoot in black and white are very reluctant to use any type of technology to produce black and white photographs from any digital sources. However, there is photo editing software that is dedicated to transforming color formats to black and white. Still, there is even a debate about how much editing delegitimizes the entire digital format, but in particular black and white photography. This debate is further exacerbated because often turning photos into black and white is a method by which some photographers rescue unsuccessful color photographs. It is the reason that this is possible that is at the crux of taking spectacular black and white photos.

Black and White or Bad Color?

The reason that many bad color photos make excellent black and white photos concerns natural lighting. Black and white photography is often better in bright, natural light. This light is often found in times that are not conducive to color photography. Furthermore, the thing that may have attracted these color photographers out in the in correct light is dramatic cloudy and overcast days. These times are the most prime times for producing excellent black and white portraiture, but great color photographs at these times is rare.

The Appeal

However, the appeal to viewers is not based on the simple elements of a beautiful photographs. Black and white photography has the ability to reflect time. This ability is one of the prominent features in many photographs, but it is especially reticent in black and white photography. Black and white photography remains timeless because of this and produces ardent fans.

Landscape Photography

Great landscape photography renders emotion from natural beauty. Initially, this may invite amateur photographers to try this genre of photography. When people understand that great landscape photography requires real work, talent and artistry, the revelation causes less willing amateurs to move on. However, when approached correctly with the appropriate artistic elements, great landscape photography is achievable and with minimally expensive equipment. This is evident in that many of the most famous landscape photographers achieved their great works with less technology than is contained in a digital point and shoot.

Doing The Work

They also achieved much of their brilliant portrayals by spending many hours manipulating the final image with many techniques that were thought to be cutting edge at the time. Great landscape photography is also achieved by some physical accompaniments like filters. This makes utilizing some image altering technology to reproduce what the eye visualizes naturally is appropriate in a digital setting also. However, knowledge of the elements of art and how to manipulate those elements ultimately determines if a picture will be successful or not. The elements include but are not confined to lighting and composition.

Innate Ability vs. Drive

Some people possess a talent that naturally selects great compositions. It is a part of the depth of naturally talented artists, but selecting great compositions can be taught. However, lighting is the most appropriate element. This is true because even a photograph that is composed well will look infinitely better in the correct light. The best light is visible as the sun rises and sets. These morning and evening hours are termed the golden hours for any outdoor photography, but especially in landscape photography.
